Rep. Vargas Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Protect DACA
Washington, D.C. (June 18, 2020) – Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-51) released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling which protects the DACA program from ending. Specifically, the Supreme Court ruled that the means in which the Trump administration ended DACA was illegal under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).
In addition, the 5-4 ruling allows DACA recipients, known as DREAMers, to continue renewing their DACA status, and allows eligible individuals to submit an application to USCIS. DREAMers may also continue to have work authorization and temporary protection from deportation.
“This is an incredible victory for our immigrant youth and a testament to their hard work and contribution to our nation. For now, DREAMers, may continue working in the United States without fear of deportation. DREAMers were brought to this country as children and are a part of our community. I have, and will continue, working in Congress to make sure that the doors of opportunity are open to DREAMers who call the United States home.
"I applaud the Supreme Court ruling in favor of hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth and their loved ones. USCIS must begin accepting new DACA applications and renewals as today’s Supreme Court ruling restores the program to its original state. I urge all qualified DACA recipients to apply and renew today.
“DACA has helped young immigrants work legally, go to college, and build lives in the United States. DREAMers are our neighbors, family, and friends. Trump tried to take deportation protections away from our DREAMers based on his anti-immigrant agenda. Even as Trump continues to threaten their legal status, we will continue fighting, because DREAMers are here to stay."
Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County, and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.
